Queen Rania Award's Office--Elevating Teachers

This afternoon we met with Lubna Touqan who is the Executive Director of The Queen Rania Awards. Through The Queen Rania Awards for Excellence in Teaching (click for the webpage) Queen Rania is energizing the teaching profession in Jordan. Each of our Jordanian colleagues (Hiyam, Manal, Maysoun, Mustava, and Rabia) is a winner of this award. They have been recognized as being some of the most accomplished teachers in Jordan for their energy, intelligence, commitment to student learning, and compassion. In Jordan, teachers were traditionally the respected leaders of village, town and urban communities. Over time, and with modernization, teachers have lost a lot of their status. Unfortunately with modernization in Jordan, and in the US, the prestige accorded to learning has been supplanted by a love of earning large salaries...respect has switched from those who learn to those who earn. Queen Rania is trying to restore teaching to its rightful place as a profession of respect and high status.
